Wikipedia and the DSA: How the world’s largest online encyclopedia assesses systemic risks as a global non-profit

2 October 2025 @ 17:00

Renaissance Hotel,  Rue du Parnasse 19

Followed by a cocktail reception

People from around the world access the world’s largest online encyclopedia from 1.8 billion unique devices, edit it more than 350 times a minute, and browse articles in more than 300 languages every month. Content on this top-ten global platform is edited, curated, and protected by more than 280,000 active volunteer editors around the world. Yet despite its prominence in the digital ecosystem, Wikipedia is not hosted by a multi-billion dollar corporation, but rather by a non-profit organization with a relatively modest budget.  So, how does the only community driven, non-profit VLOP approach systemic risks and compliance with the DSA? What challenges does it face? And, most importantly, what are the most pressing risks facing Wikipedia’s volunteer editors and broader society in Europe?  Join staff from Wikimedia Europe and the Wikimedia Foundation to discuss these critical issues as the DSA enters into its fourth year.
